The following letter to the editor is regarding Tamworth's 2026 Parish Council Consultation and was published in the Tamworth Herald on the 1st Oct, 2026 (Page 10)
Dear Editor,
In April 2028, Tamworth Borough Council is being completely abolished, and our town is being swallowed up by a massive, distant mega-council.
And in truth, the idea of our local affairs being run by a giant remote committee sounds about as appealing as a tube of Marmite-flavoured toothpaste. There is a very real danger that our jewel of a town will become a forgotten footnote on someone else's spreadsheet, with decisions about our housing, rent prices, bin collections, and education made by people who couldn't find the town centre without a sat-nav.
Fortunately, we have the opportunity to build a cultural shield by creating a singular Tamworth Parish Council.
The council’s plan to rename our voting zones to historic titles like Mercia, Saxon, and Peel is truly inspired, and shows they are not only willing to defend Tamworth's historical importance but double down upon it. And better still, the proposal ensures these fifteen new parish councillors will be entirely unpaid volunteers. This too is of great significance; offering exactly zero pounds serves to sieve out any and all career politicians, ensuring the seats are filled only by genuine locals who actually care about the town.
In short, a parish council keeps Tamworth’s decisions in Tamworth’s hands. The public consultation closes this coming Sunday, 4 October 2026. I urge every resident to visit tamworth.gov.uk/CGR, fill out the survey, and vote "Support"— and let us guide our illustrious town for generations to come.
Yours sincerely,
Michael Lieber
